Arthropod Armageddon

The focus of art and media in this current Anthropocene epoch is often restricted to the prepossessing living. The recent rapid decline in arthropods due to climate change is destroying complex ecosystems, resulting in concerning detriments to agriculture and economies. Arthropod Armageddon, a watercolour and pencil series pays homage to the essential arthropods, and the produce that relies on them. The lights framing each painting, reminiscent of Mariolatry are used to add veneration to the subjects. Each painting acts as a portrait to provide a deeper insight into the realities of extinction and the rippling effects of climate change.

The Long Road Project

Portrait of Prudence Melom, 2019

‘The Long Road Project’ is a collaborative project with the Toowoomba based NGO ‘E-Raced’. The project aims to generate a more empathetic view from the public on the topic of refugee immigration into Australia. The body of work consists of four expressive portraits of Majok Piok, Khaled Ali and Prudence Melom, the founder of E-raced. The three sitters’ are active members of E-raced; they share their journeys as Refugees to youth in schools around Australia in an attempt to stop racism through the power of storytelling. The artist travelled to Toowoomba to meet the sitters and build rapport in person before she began painting the portraits. This enabled her to accurately portray the individuals on a personal level. She was able to match the colour palette of each portrait to the sitter’s character. The artist carefully selected appropriate photographs to use as inspiration that expressed ‘the inner self’ of each sitter. When exhibited, minimalistic booklets accompanied each portrait featuring raw, unedited scripts of the stories shared with the artist during the recorded interviews. The project will develop as the artist continues to utilise contemporary portraiture techniques and the power of storytelling as a platform to work towards herself and Prudence’s important goal.

“My series ‘The Long Road’ consists of three mixed media portraits, revealing the stories of Refugees I have interviewed who have resettled in Australia. The Portraits have been inspired by the Australian artist Ben Quilty and his ‘After Afghanistan’ series. Quilty’s expressive painting style is rich with emotion in this series as he depicts the stories and trauma of Australian servicemen and women who were deployed to Afghanistan.  My portraits imitate Quilty’s distinct and expressive brushstrokes and a wide variety of bright animated colours to construct each sitters face. Stéphanie Ledoux’s use of mixed media in her portraits has inspired the compositions in ‘The Long Road’ series. The foundation of her artwork ‘Burma – Kalaw’ uses fabric with traditional Burmese pattern as well as copied documents, diary pages and maps that help define the stories behind the faces drawn on the mixed media background. ‘The Long Road’ series allows viewers insight into the lives of Refugees, with an aim to generate a more empathetic view from the public on the topics of refugee immigration into Australia.  ‘The Long Road’ is apart of a larger research project that I hope to expand over the next few years.”
